Kate graduated from the University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee with a Bachelor of Art in Political Science and a Minor in Mathematics. She worked as an intern in the U.S. Senate before attending law school at the University of South Carolina School of Law, where she was the Managing Editor of the Southeastern Environmental Law Journal and Secretary of the South Carolina Student Trial Lawyers Association.

Upon graduating from law school, Kate served as a judicial law clerk to the Honorable Knox McMahon in South Carolina’sEleventh Judicial Circuit. Thereafter, she joined the Eleventh Circuit Solicitor’s Office, where she prosecuted cases involving serious injuries to victims, including cases involving murder, domestic violence, and sexual assault. In 2013, the United States Attorney for the District of South Carolina presented Kate with the John R. Justice Community Leadership Award, which is given annually to one South Carolina solicitor in recognition of outstanding community leadership and exemplary citizenship.
