Cheryl devoted much of her early legal career to First Amendment and public interest issues. She was awarded the Reid Montgomery First Amendment/Freedom of Information Award by the South Carolina Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists in 1986. She went on to practice appellate procedure for a number of years before focusing on catastrophic injury and complex class action/business cases.
